Awards Breakfast Honors Exceptional Hardscape Projects

The awards breakfast ceremony took place on Friday, October 28th at the Kentucky Exposition Center, Louisville, KY. The Hardscape Project Awards recognize outstanding hardscape projects by contractors in residential and commercial/industrial applications. In its fourth year, the awards program received 84 entries. A total of 16 award winners and 12 honorable mentions were recognized during the breakfast.

The Commercial/Industrial HNA Hardscape Project Awards winners were recognized in categories of clay brick, concrete paver, segmental retaining wall and a combination of all hardscape products.

RFB&D Honors Remarkable Educational Success of Students with Learning Differences

Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D), the nations leading provider of accessible educational content, today honored several outstanding students with reading disabilities at its 51st annual National Achievement Awards celebration.

In addition to receiving cash awards of $ 6,000, the winners and their families will participate at a media roundtable on Capitol Hill, meet with Members of Congress and public officials, and be recognized for their accomplishments at a reception held in their honor.

Since 1959, RFB&D has honored exceptional students through the privately endowed Mary P. Oenslager Scholastic Achievement Awards (SAA) for college seniors and beyond who are blind or visually impaired. In 1991, the Marion Huber Learning Through Listening Awards (LTL) were instituted for high school seniors with learning differences such as dyslexia. Hundreds of students apply each year and are selected by committees of RFB&D staff, volunteers, board members, parents, and educators. This year, the number of applicants more than doubled.

These students are recognized for their academic excellence, extraordinary leadership, and service to others. All of them have thrived on their education paths thanks in part to their extensive use of accessible educational content and assistive technology provided by RFB&D. Each award winner has a long list of honors and accomplishments, and has graduated with a GPA above 3.0, with most near the 4.0 mark. The roster of winners includes:

New Type of School Helps 17-Year-Old Surfer, Coco Ho, Graduate High School With Honors While Competing on The Association of Professional Surfers (ASP) World Championship Tour

Coco Ho, the youngest surfer on the ASP World Championship Tour graduated this June with honors from Elite Element Academy, (E2A) making her one of E2A's most high profile success stories. E2A is one of the first schools set up to offer individualized, interactive education for students who are pursuing their dreams. The online school supports students' pursuit of life experiences while providing a college prep education and fulfills the needs of students who don't have the time to sit in a classroom all day.

Do you ask where the balance is between the desire to excel in something - a sport, drama, or music - and the heavy demand of necessary academics - the reading, writing, science and mathematics? In the past, parents of students pursuing a special talent often ended up sacrificing their children's education. With the help of the internet, Elite Element Academy can provide the opportunity for both. Students no longer have to give up on a dream in order to pursue an education.

Kanoe Ahuna, the founder of Elite Element Academy, was familiar with the sacrifices made to pursue her dreams, she was on the World Body Boarding tour before the internet and had to complete some of her undergraduate college classes through correspondence courses, sending her papers via snail mail from different tour locations around the world. More recently, Kanoe was encouraged to start an online school because of the combination of her work in education and her son, Kilikai's need to travel. Kilikai is a primary student and competes in motocross races across the US, from California to Florida. In her travels, Kanoe kept meeting parents who were looking for a school to support their children's academics while supporting their children's pursuit of being the best in their sport, and this need was fulfilled with the creation of Elite Element Academy (E2A).

E2A is a K-12 Independent Global Learning Community. The vision of E2A is to provide a global learning environment by combining top educational resources, tools and support, allowing opportunities for the non-traditional students. The mission is to offer high quality, individualized instruction while supporting students' special talents. All work is available online and students have access to their work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students are supported by professional, licensed teachers and receive a Macbook along with Mac's Mobile Me accounts to allow constant communication with teachers along with most innovative online resources for class learning projects. Teachers are available to help students with their classes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., currently, Hawaii time, Monday through Friday, following a traditional school calendar. E2A was created to support children traveling for sports, or other special talents but the school is also perfect for families who travel throughout the year for other reasons too.

Many students have already been benefiting from the opportunity E2A provides. Coco Ho, a 2009 graduate, has been attending E2A for the last two years and has said, "E2A is the only way," referring to the opportunity to compete on the Women's Championship Tour and graduate form high school with honors this June. Four of the Junior World Surf Team competitors, Keanu Asing, Kyle Galtes, Matty Costa, and Kaimana Jaquias, also benefited from attending E2A when they were able to compete in Ecuador last April. They competed during the day, completed schoolwork in the evenings, and shared their experiences with other E2A students on the E2A campus life online community board. They were able to work together on a group learning project and created a website on their Ecuadorian experience, earning credit for one of their required community leadership projects.

E2A is a private school and requires an Academic Coach, usually a parent, to maintain weekly communication with their student's lead teacher and structure study time for the student. All teachers are licensed and certified by the State of Hawaii. E2A currently services students from Hawaii to Florida but is now accepting international students as well. All orientations and Academic Coach trainings can be completed via the Internet and by using video conferencing and screen sharing capabilities.
